New Wine of the Week: Viognier

Viognier grapes produce wines with lush, soft character. Unlike Chardonnay, the Viognier varietal has natural aromatics that including notes of peach, pears, and violets. In 1965, the once common grape was almost extinct, perhaps due to the difficulty of growing this fruit.

A long warm growing season is preferable, also Viognier must be picked when just right. Too early; the grape fails to develop the full extent of its aroma and taste. Too late; the grape produces wine that is oily and lacks perfume. Pair with your Asian favorites or maybe a savory grilled chicken.
